Smithtown Building Closed

Due to the storm that occurred during the early morning hours of August 19, which caused torrential flooding, our Smithtown Building suffered catastrophic damage to its lower level. Therefore, until further notice, our Smithtown Building will be closed while we continue to assess the damage and begin to rebuild.  Our other three buildings remain open to assist our patrons. Program Description

Event Details

In the mid-19th century, for more than a decade, Long Island was home to a community of radicals. The experimental village of Modern Times, known today as Brentwood, attracted all sorts of nonconformists including spiritualists, suffragettes, dress-reformers, and proponents of the era’s most dangerous idea, free-love.  Peter Ward, local history librarian and historian will share the shocking history of this unconventional place, the front-page controversies caused by its residents, and the unexpected influence that these local reformers have had on the way we live today.
