Kings Park Building Teen Programs

In-person, online and telephone registration for all May programs began on Monday, April 8.
Registration for June programs begins on Monday, May 13.
Registration is required unless otherwise noted.
Programs that require fees can be paid by credit card, cash, check or money order to The Smithtown Library.
Program fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
Teen programs are open to those in grades 6-12 unless otherwise noted.


Paint a Planter
Saturday, May 4 • 3:00-4:00pm
Paint planters to use as garden decorations or a spring gift. We will be using paint, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing.

Game Buddies Volunteers
Tuesday, May 7 • 4:00-5:00pm
Earn community service by playing fun board games with a younger child. Each teen will receive one hour of community service for participating.

Homework Helpers
Wednesday, May 8 • 4:00-5:00pm

Volunteers in grades 9-12 will work one-on-one with children in grades K-5 assisting them with homework and studying. All volunteers must submit an application and a letter of recommendation prior to the start of the program. You must register for each date you wish to volunteer after submitting an application.

Battle of the Books

Are you a teen entering grades 6-9? Do you like trivia and reading? Have you ever heard of Battle of the Books and wondered what the fuss is all about? At this informational meeting, we will release the eight titles featured in this year's competition and discuss the ins and outs of what Battle is all about. Weekly meetings will begin in June to prepare for the final battle at Stony Brook University on Saturday, August 10.

Book Sale Room Volunteers
Wednesday, May 15 • 7:00-8:00pm
Teen volunteers are needed to assist collecting and sorting donations as well as helping to maintain the Friends of The Smithtown Library book sale.

Book Buddies Volunteers
Thursday, May 16 • 4:00-5:00pm
Read to a younger book buddy. It is a rewarding experience that you won't want to miss. Each teen will receive one hour of community service.

Art Buddies Volunteers
Monday, May 20 • 4:00-5:00pm
Enjoy earning community service by spending an afternoon paired with a younger child for some art projects. Each teen will receive one hour of community service for participating. We will be using art materials, please dress appropriately.

Splatter Paint Art
Saturday, May 25 • 2:00-4:00pm
Be a rebel and get your splatter on to create colorful and dynamic works of art. This program will be held outside and may get messy, so be sure to wear appropriate clothing.

Junior LEGO® Buddies Volunteers

Be paired with a younger child and help him/her with their LEGO® creation. Each teen will receive one hour of community service.

Battle of the Books
Thursdays, June 20, 27, July 11, 18, 25, Tuesday, July 30, Thursday, August 1, & Tuesday, August 6 • 3:30-5:00pm
The Battle of the Books is a county-wide competition for teens who wish to represent their public library. The competition will take place on Saturday, August 10 at Stony Brook University. Teams will answer trivia questions based on eight different books and score points for their team with each correct answer. To be eligible to participate, you must be entering grades 6-9; you must be able to attend meetings and must be ready for a summer of reading fun.

Retro Gaming with RetroPie for Teens
Wednesday, June 26 • 7:00-8:00pm
Learn about the Raspberry Pi and RetroPie software that will allow you to play old school video games. Learn how to set-up, install and even demo a couple of games from the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and many other gaming systems.

Nebula Paint Night
Thursday, June 27 • 7:00-8:30pm
Use acrylic paint and cosmic colors to create your own galaxy.
