 Library of Things Procedure

1. The Library circulates unconventional items and devices through the Library of Things collection. Based on item availability, reservations may be made online by following the check mark below or by calling (631) 360-2480 or in-person at the Reference Desk of one of the four Smithtown Library buildings. The patron making the reservation must check out the item or device using their own card in person at the Reference Desk.
2. Items and devices are available for checkout to Smithtown Library adult cardholders aged 18 and older with a library account in good standing.
3. Items and devices have a 7 day loan period. When you make a reservation for an item, you will specify a pickup date that you would like to borrow the item.  Return dates are based on the item's loan period and the date in which you want to pick up the item.  Return dates will be displayed on the confirmation screen after you make your reservation. You must return the item by the return date specified, even if you pick up the item later than your original scheduled pickup date. The reservation period is fixed and does not change based on pickup date as our standard collection does.
4. Fines and replacement charges vary for each item and you are responsible for lost or damaged items and devices that you borrow.
5. You will be notified by email when your item is ready to be picked up.
6. Items and devices must be returned to the Reference Desk and may not be returned in the outside book drop nor to any facility other than one of the four Smithtown Library Buildings (Commack, Kings Park, Nesconset, Smithtown). The item must be returned to the same building that it was checked out from.
7. If you are unable to borrow the item or device, cancel your reservation by calling the Reference Desk at one of the four buildings at (631) 360-2480. Failure to cancel a reserved item or device will result in flagging your account as a “No Show” and will impact your future Library of Things borrowing privileges.
8. You may view your reservations and make changes online on our Library of Things page. As a courtesy to others, please cancel any reservation you will not be using as soon as possible.
9. The Library reserves the right to review and amend these guidelines as it becomes necessary.
10. The borrower must sign the Digital Device/Equipment Borrowing Terms and Conditions when picking an item up.
