On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, the Smithtown Library celebrated the grand re-opening of the Richard H. Handley Collection of Long Island Americana (Long Island Room). The evening's program started with opening remarks from Library Director, Robert Lusak and Long Island Room Librarians, Cathy Ball and Caren Zatyk. Smithtown Town Historian, Brad Harris then delivered the featured presentation, an illustrated lecture about the life of Richard H. Handley. Suffolk County Legislator, John Kennedy, Jr. (12th Suffolk County Legislative District) and Library Board of Trustees President, Anthony Monteleone closed the formal portion of the program by adding a few last remarks about the importance of the Long Island Room and the Smithtown Library to the community.
Attendees were then invited to observe the ribbon cutting ceremony (the ribbon was cut by Smithtown Town Historian, Brad Harris) and had an opportunity to view some of the collection's most remarkable highlights in an accompanying exhibit.
It was a very special event that marked not only the culmination of many months of renovation, reorganization and planning, but also the start of the Long Island Room's future endeavors.
Thank you to all who helped make this evening possible and to all those who attended! Your support of the Long Island Room and its ongoing work is greatly appreciated!
