John Newbery Medal - The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

Randolph Caldecott Medal - The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award - The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, established in 2004, is given annually (beginning in 2006) to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished contribution to the body of American children’s literature known as beginning reader books published in the United States during the preceding year.

Mildred L. Batchelder Award - This award, established in Mildred L. Batchelder's honor in 1966, is a citation awarded to an American publisher for a children's book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States.

Pura Belpré Award - The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

Schneider Family Book Award - The Schneider Family Book Awards honor an author or illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal - The Sibert Award honors the most distinguished informational book published in English in the preceding year for its significant contribution to children’s literature.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Award - The award, a bronze medal, honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

Odyssey Award for Excellence in Audiobook Production - This annual award will be given to the producer of the best audiobook produced for children and/or young adults, available in English in the United States.

Featured Children's Book

9780803737495 p0 v1 s260x420Benjamin Franklin is a true Renaissance Man!  Many biographies have been written, but, Electric Ben: The Amazing Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin, deserves a look.  Upon opening the book, the reader is drawn in by the end papers filled with witty Franklin quotes!  Chronicling his life and accomplishments from birth to adult, author/illustrator Robert Byrd, creates a truly fascinating image of Franklin that makes for an enjoyable read.  Due to the picture book format, but nonfiction content, this book can be adored by a wide audience.  So take a tip from Franklin himself, and check this book out because "an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest." 

Logo - 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

All families and caregivers are encouraged to read at least 1000 books with their young children before they enter Kindergarten. Reading to preschool-age children builds vocabulary, language skills, and helps prepare them for Kindergarten. Families can build the skills needed for future success. Ask your children's librarian for more information.
